The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will make a change to payment dates for Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in just two weeks, giving some claimants their money earlier than usual.

The change is due to the August bank holiday, which falls on Monday, 25 August 2025. It will affect claimants in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland who receive State Pension, Universal Credit, PIP, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), and other benefits.

Payments Will Arrive Early

Government guidance explains that if your payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, you will usually be paid on the previous working day instead. This means that anyone expecting their benefit on 25 August will receive it on Friday, 22 August.

Payments are normally made directly into a bank, building society, or credit union account. For those unable to open an account, alternative arrangements can be made by calling the Universal Credit helpline.

Which Benefits Are Affected

The early payment applies to a range of benefits, including:

  • Universal Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Pension Credit
  • Child Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Income Support

For many people, this means extra breathing room for bills and essentials, but it’s important to budget carefully, as the money will need to last longer until the next payment.

Universal Credit Payments

According to official guidance, after your first payment, Universal Credit is paid on the same date each month. If that date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, payment is made on the last working day before.

Your online account will show your monthly statement and the exact payment amount. If you need help managing your finances, you can request an Alternative Payment Arrangement (APA), which could mean more frequent payments or having your rent paid directly to your landlord.
